18 May 2010: Agilent Technologies Inc. today announced that its acquisition of scientific-equipment maker Varian, Inc. is now final. Agilent paid approximately $1.5 billion in cash for Varian in a deal that brings together two Silicon Valley pioneers.

Members Approve SBS-ALA Merger
11 May 2010: The leaders of the Society for Biomolecular Sciences (SBS) and the Association for Laboratory Automation (ALA) have been strategizing a merger to unite their scientific societies as one inclusive organization—the Society for Laboratory Automation and Screening (SLAS). As of Wednesday, May 5, both memberships officially authorized the merger with more than 95% of the votes cast in favor.

Are Natural Products Delivering? Experiences and Recommendations from 27 Screening Campaigns
04 May 2010: In this application note from BioFocus, microbial strain subfractions are generated and used in high-throughput screens (HTS) for analysis with regard to diversity, selectivity and strain origin. Natural compounds were identified during the follow up of subfraction screening programs and their chemical properties have been analyzed. Searches in natural product databases revealed that 135 of the 645 identified natural compounds are novel compounds.
